On your way to Island Stones and driving past Catherineberg’s beautiful historic sugar mill ruins you begin to sense a peacefulness that only being there can describe. The lucky few that have vacation home villas in this USVI National Park will be very hard to spot due to the lush tropical vegetation and large spacious property.
Enter through Island Stones' gate down the long easy lane lined with native stone walls and gorgeous tropical fauna. The best surprise happens as you enter the main level pool and bar deck. The views out over the Caribbean Isles and the sense of calm that rushes over me are truly indescribable.
All your favorite beaches are near Island Stones. Old St John is still found in one place, Catherineberg. Away from road noise you will smell the Bay Rum trees, watch the hummingbirds, feel the constant tradewind breeze, and stare in awe at the truly spectacular views. For those of us that know the island well this is where you can enjoy the very best of St John and truly feel paradise.
The construction of Island Stones began in the 1960’s. Back then St John was even more quiet and quaint than today. Unlike Island Stones today, most villas were very simple and did not have amenities such as ac or even pools. However, due to the location of Island Stones right smack in the Virgin Islands trade wind breezes and so close to the most beautiful beaches on the planet, ac and pools were not needed anyway.
Some of the very large oversized brick and corner coral pieces date back to the days of St John sugar mills. Materials were sometimes used from the ballasts of ships coming to the island and somehow found their way into the original construction of Island Stones. Today, Island Stones retains its Old St John feel. Much of the villas retaining walls and buildings are made with the same technique used during the construction of the sugar mills.
